Posted: 1:02 PM- PROVO - A local author will finish the final novel in the 12-book "Wheel of Time" fantasy series.
Brandon Sanderson was selected by the widow of Robert Jordan, whose real name was James Oliver Rigney Jr. He died from a blood disease in September in South Carolina.
More than 14 million books in the series have been sold in North America; more than 30 million worldwide, according to the publisher, Tor Books.
The final book is titled "A Memory of Light."
"To me, Robert Jordan is still kind of a mythological figure," Sanderson told the Daily Herald of Provo. "I would have done this with no credit and no payment, to be perfectly honest."
Sanderson, a graduate of Brigham Young University, has four books in print. His first novel, "Elantris," was published in 2005.
Jordan's books tells of Rand al'Thor, who is destined to become the champion who will battle ultimate evil in a mythical land.
Jordan's widow and the book's editor, Harriet Popham Rigney, said she was "absolutely delighted" that Sanderson agreed to finish it.
The first title in the series, "The Eye of the World," was published in 1990.
Book 11, "Knife of Dreams," came out in 2005; there was also a prequel, "New Spring: The Novel," in 2004. The other titles in the series
include "The Great Hunt," "Lord of Chaos" and "The Path of Daggers."
Jordan was working on the 12th book at the time of his death.
"He left copious notes and hours of audio recordings," Rigney said in a statement on Tor Books' Web site
